Photography - PoliceBox

Police Box, Glasgow, June 2008. (c) Robert J.E. Simpson, 2008. Not to be reused without permission

The Police Box project is concerned with recording the existence of the obsolete communication boxes dotted around the UK, primarily in Scotland. Once ubiquitous and in various shapes and styles the familiar blue box is now best know for its associations with BBC tv series Doctor Who. The project includes examples of the traditional box, its siblings, modern rethinks, variations and bastardisations.

Outside the Tube station at Earl's Court sits a Police Box, installed in the 1990s. I've been planning a series on Police Boxes since my trip to Edinburgh in 2003, so expect to see more like this in future. When installed most people would only know it from Doctor Who, and how much more true that must be now that the show has returned. The box is now once again redundant. The black and white image looks as if it was taken years ago when the box was still operating. I love the passer-by who appears to be looking at the box in something akin to shock....

A detail photograph of the Earl's Court Police Box. The Police Box is a beauty of Victorian architecture - so wonderfully geometric and symmetrical. A vivid blue in colour, and as striking as the old red K2 telephone kiosks. For anyone interested, I took this early on a Saturday morning.

A detail photograph of the Police Box at the corner of Regent Street in London. More of a police information centre than the old style boxes, but still with the distinctive blue livery and flashing light on top. This one was taken about 7.30am on a Sunday, with only a handful of pedestrians walking around.

The Police Boxes in Edinburgh are a different breed, with many having been converted to coffee and ice cream stalls.
This one is at the top of India Street, near Stockbridge.

This rather smaller Police Box (or Post) stands at one end of Regent Street, by Picadilly Circus. All of London whizzes past seemingly unaware of this relic...

A similar example stands in a more dilapidated state along the river (see below).

Another Police Post rather than a full size Police Box. This one is down by the river, along the embankment in London. In quite a dilapidated condition when I photographed it, it was a delight to see the variance on the traditional boxes.
